Nearly half of all Americans—47.5 percent—are employed by small businesses. This means that 58.9 million employees in the United States work at a small business.

  • Businesses with less than 100 workers employ the largest share of American workers.
  • Private-sector employment increased 1.8 percent during the 12-month period ending in February 2018.
  • The number of proprietors increased by 2.3 percent in 2016.
  • Small businesses created 1.9 million net jobs in 2015. Those with fewer than 20 employees saw the largest gains, adding 1.1 million net jobs.
